Magic Select is Paint 3D’s edge-detection tool for isolating objects, removing backgrounds, and creating reusable cutout stickers. This guide covers where to find it, how to use each step of its selection workflow, and how to produce transparent PNG exports. Paint 3D was discontinued by Microsoft in November 2024, but Magic Select remains functional on existing installations.
What Magic Select Does
Magic Select analyzes pixel color and contrast boundaries to detect the edges of a subject within your image. It separates the subject from its surrounding background, producing a clean cutout that you can move, copy, paste as a sticker, or place on a transparent canvas for export.
The tool works best with images that have clear contrast between the foreground subject and the background. High-resolution photos with well-lit subjects against solid or uniform backgrounds produce the cleanest edges. Low-contrast images, hair, fur, and semi-transparent materials (glass, smoke) require manual refinement using the Add and Remove brushes in the second step of the workflow.
Object Isolation
Select a person, product, or element from a photo and separate it from everything around it.
Background Removal
Delete the background entirely, leaving only the selected subject on the canvas or on a transparent layer.
Sticker Creation
Convert cutouts into reusable stickers that can be stamped onto other 2D or 3D surfaces within Paint 3D projects.
How to Use Magic Select
Magic Select follows a three-phase workflow: frame, refine, finalize. Each phase gives you control over the selection boundary.
- Open your image. Click Menu > Open > Browse files and load the image containing the subject you want to isolate.
- Activate Magic Select. Click Magic Select in the top toolbar. The button is located between the Canvas and Effects tabs. You can also press the M key as a shortcut.
- Frame the subject. A blue-bordered selection box appears over the canvas. Drag the handles of this box to tightly frame the object you want to select. The tighter the frame around your subject, the more accurate the initial detection will be. Exclude as much background as possible from this frame.
- Click Next. Paint 3D processes the framed area and highlights the detected subject with a glowing blue outline. The background within the frame dims slightly to indicate what will be excluded.
- Refine the selection. In the right-side panel, you will see Add and Remove buttons. Click Add, then draw over any areas of your subject that Magic Select missed. Click Remove, then draw over any background areas that were incorrectly included. Small, precise strokes produce better results than broad sweeps.
- Click Done. Magic Select finalizes the cutout. The selected subject becomes a movable element floating above the canvas. The area it occupied is automatically filled with a background color estimate (content-aware fill).
Removing Backgrounds with Magic Select
After creating a cutout, removing the background requires a few additional steps to produce a clean result.
- Complete the Magic Select workflow (steps 1-6 above). Your subject is now a floating cutout.
- Click on the background area (the canvas behind the cutout) to select it.
- Press Ctrl+A to select all remaining background content, then press Delete to remove it.
- Click the Canvas tab in the top toolbar.
- Toggle Transparent canvas to On. The white canvas background is replaced with the standard checkered transparency pattern.
- Click your cutout subject to reselect it and position it on the transparent canvas.
- Export via Menu > Save As > Image > PNG. PNG is the only format in Paint 3D that preserves alpha transparency.

Using Cutouts as Stickers
Every Magic Select cutout automatically becomes a sticker that you can reuse within Paint 3D projects.
- After completing Magic Select and clicking Done, the cutout floats on the canvas as a movable object.
- Right-click the cutout and select Make Sticker from the context menu.
- The cutout is saved to the Stickers panel under the custom stickers section.
- To use it, click the Stickers tab, select your custom sticker, then click on any 2D or 3D surface to apply it.
- Drag the sticker to reposition. Use corner handles to resize. Use rotation handles to angle it.
Stickers wrap onto 3D object surfaces, which makes them useful for applying labels, decals, and textures to 3D models within Paint 3D.
Tips for Better Magic Select Results
Maximize Contrast
Magic Select detects edges through color and brightness differences. A dark subject on a light background (or vice versa) produces far cleaner edges than subjects that blend into similarly-colored surroundings.
Frame Tightly
Drag the selection box as close to your subject as possible. A tight frame reduces the amount of background the algorithm needs to analyze and lowers the chance of false detection around the edges.
Refine in Small Strokes
When using Add or Remove in the refinement step, draw short, precise strokes directly on the problem edges. Long sweeping strokes often overcorrect and include or exclude too much.
Use High-Resolution Images
Higher resolution gives Magic Select more pixel data to analyze, producing smoother edge detection. Images below 500×500 pixels often result in jagged or imprecise cutout boundaries.
What Magic Select Cannot Do
Magic Select is a useful tool, but it has boundaries. Understanding these limitations helps you decide when to use it and when to switch to a more specialized image editor.
- Hair and fine details: Individual strands of hair, wispy fur, and thin fibers are difficult for Magic Select to detect. Cutouts around hair typically produce hard, unnatural edges rather than the soft feathering that dedicated tools (like Photoshop’s Select and Mask) provide.
- Semi-transparent subjects: Glass, smoke, water splashes, and gauze do not cut cleanly because the tool treats pixels as either included or excluded, with no partial transparency.
- Same-color boundaries: If the subject and background share similar colors and brightness, the edge detection struggles to find the boundary line.
- Batch processing: Magic Select works on one selection at a time within a single image. There is no batch or multi-select mode.
