Paint 3D includes two distinct text modes: a flat 2D text tool and a full 3D text tool. How to Access the Text Tool

The text tool in Paint 3D sits in the top menu bar. Follow these steps to open it:

To edit existing text, double-click the 3D text object to re-enter the text editing mode. You can select portions of text with click-and-drag, then retype or delete as needed. The text box can be resized by dragging its corner handles, which scales the text proportionally.

Keep text concise for 3D projects. Long sentences or paragraphs become difficult to read when rotated in three-dimensional space. Short phrases, titles, and single words produce the clearest results.

Note that after conversion, you can no longer edit the text content directly. If you need to change the wording, delete the 3D object and create new text from scratch. This is one of the key limitations of the conversion workflow.

Rotating and Positioning 3D Text

Three-dimensional text in Paint 3D supports full spatial manipulation. Once your text exists as a 3D object, you can control its position and orientation precisely:

Rotation: Select the 3D text object. Rotation handles appear around the selection box. Drag the curved arrows to rotate around the X-axis (tilt forward/backward), Y-axis (spin left/right), or Z-axis (roll clockwise/counterclockwise). Hold Shift while dragging to snap rotation to 15-degree increments for precise angles.

Positioning: Click and drag the object to move it horizontally and vertically across the canvas. To move text forward or backward in depth (along the Z-axis), use the small button beneath the selection box or hold the corresponding keyboard shortcut while dragging.

Layering with models: 3D text interacts with 3D models in the scene. You can place text in front of, behind, or overlapping other objects. The depth ordering determines which elements appear in front when the scene is rendered or exported.

Limitations of 3D Text in Paint 3D

  • Limited extrusion control. Unlike dedicated 3D software such as Blender, Paint 3D does not let you adjust extrusion depth, bevel edges, or add material textures to text surfaces.
  • No per-character styling. You cannot apply different colors or fonts to individual characters within the same text object.
